What is an LED strip?

An LED strip is a strip with small LED lamps. LED stands for Light Emitting Diodes.

The strips are used as decoration or functional lighting. For example, the lighting can create a cozy atmosphere but also serve as staircase lighting for safe steps.

LED specialists since 2008

BuyLEDstrip (LED strip buying in English) was founded by Erik Kremers. He began in 2008 designing smart lighting products for households, primarily in artwork and planters.

In 2010, he switched to LED lighting and started this online store. He fully specialized in this type of lighting and therefore selects reliable LED strips. Furthermore, he offers personalized advice and is more than just a seller of LED lighting.

Today, BuyLEDstrip.com has grown into an international seller of LED lighting.

Increasing popularity of LED strips

LED strips became especially popular in 2010 - coinciding with the founding of BuyLEDstrip.

Previously, the strips were mainly used in the automotive industry and decorative building lighting. In 2010, new technological developments made them affordable for everyone.

As LED strips became more affordable, more people started buying them for home use. A few years later, this type of lighting could be found everywhere. Not only in homes but also in bars and restaurants, stores and shop windows, theaters, and offices.

The advent of smart LED lighting further increased sales. Thanks to these systems, the strips can also be controlled via apps like Philips Hue, Zigbee, Alexa, and Homey.

LED strips became mainstream and were frequently found in homes, bars, restaurants, and even as outdoor lighting. The rise of smart LED lighting, which can be controlled via apps, also contributed to their popularity.

Advantages of LED strips

The main reasons to buy a good LED strip are:

  • Energy-efficient, leading to low energy bills
  • Extremely long lifespan
  • Versatile because you can bend and cut them
  • Available as individual strips or complete sets
  • Easy to install, often with adhesive backing
  • Easy to create the desired atmosphere, as many strips have millions of colors
  • Thin design allows installation in many places
  • High-quality LED strips produce little heat and are fire-safe
  • Waterproof LED strips can also be used outdoors

Which type of LED strip should you buy?

We have a very extensive collection of high-quality and affordable LED strips. When buying an LED strip, the color is key. The type of strip is primarily distinguished by color. Below are the different types:

Warm White

These LEDs emit yellowish light, which can be used as ambient or primary lighting. The lamps mimic the color of "traditional lighting" such as halogen and incandescent bulbs.

Cool White

These strips have a neutral white tone, also known as neutral white or pure white. The light is white or slightly bluish and is often used in offices, shops, and warehouses. It is also popular as backlighting for signs.

Dual White LEDs

With these LED strips, white tones can be adjusted. It is essentially a combination of warm white and cool white. The strip can create a relaxing atmosphere or a productive one that facilitates focused work.

Red

The red strip only displays the color red. Red has a warm, energetic, and inviting look. This strip is often purchased for specific purposes, such as a gaming room, home theater, hospitality settings, events, or for use in cars. Additionally, a red strip can be festive for holidays like Christmas.

Green

The green strip emits only green light. Green has a natural, calming, and fresh look. This strip is often used for indoor gardens, outdoor lighting, wellness centers, and cars.

Blue

This strip creates only blue light. Blue has a modern and reliable look. Blue strips are popular for home theaters, bedrooms, wellness centers, or cars.

RGB LEDs

RGB stands for "Red, Green, and Blue." These colors can be controlled independently, allowing for all the colors of the rainbow to be created.

It is also possible to create white light with an RGB strip, but the white tones are less appealing compared to RGBW and RGB-CCT strips. The white tones are slightly cooler and less pure.

The RGB strip is very affordable and is mainly purchased when colors are more important than white tones.

RGBW LEDs

RGBW stands for "Red, Green, Blue, and White." This LED strip features all rainbow colors as well as white tones. The white tones are significantly better than those of an RGB LED strip because this strip includes a dedicated white LED. This separate LED can produce multiple shades of white, with a bright and natural look.

If white tones are important, it is better to choose an RGBW LED strip over an RGB LED strip.

RGB-CCT LEDs

RGB-CCT is the most exclusive strip. This strip is slightly more expensive than the RGB and RGBW strips but offers the best white tones. The adjustable CCT white light ensures that all shades of white can be created, from warm white (2700K - 3000K) to neutral white (4000K - 4500K) and cool white (5000K - 6500K).

These strips are not only used as ambient lighting but also as functional lighting. Think of office lighting, where a white tone can be used to promote concentration.

Infrared

Infrared strips emit nearly invisible red light that radiates heat. These strips are often used for technical applications such as motion detection, night vision, and various specialized uses in research. They are also used for light therapy and in saunas.

UV LEDs

UV LEDs use ultraviolet or violet light, which is barely visible. UV LED is divided into UVA, UVB, and UVC. This lighting is often used for disinfection in hospitals or industry but also has other technical applications. The most popular application of UV LED strips is blacklight, as this lighting creates fluorescent effects. If you buy a UV LED strip in the visible spectrum, the violet light is also visually appealing.
